Baseball Splits OVC Doubleheader At Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Samford baseball team split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon. Samford won the first game, 5-3, while Tennessee Tech took game two, a seven-inning contest, by a score of 4-2.

For Samford in the first game, Michael Johnson was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Joshua Vanfleteren pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out four batters and walking none to earn the win on the mound. Trent Hill pitched the final 3.0 innings, giving up just two earned runs to earn his second save of the season.

For Tennessee Tech in the first game, Chris King, Evan Webb and Matt Mihoci had two hits each. Adam Liberatore pitched 7.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits to take the loss.

In game one, Samford took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Johnson reached base on an infield single to lead the inning off. Johnson later scored on a wild pitch to give Samford a 1-0 lead.

The scored remained the same until Samford plated four runs in the top of the eighth inning to push its lead to 5-0. Johnson singled to right field to drive in Wayne Miller and Matt Zauchin for the first two runs of the inning. John Morgan scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0. The inning's final run was scored when Michael Marseco grounded out to first base to drive in Johnson for a five-run Samford lead.

Tennessee Tech came back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 5-3. King singled up the middle to drive in Alex Henry for Tech's first run of the game. A.J. Kirby-Jones later doubled to right field to drive in King to make the score 5-2. Webb later scored on a passed ball for the game's final run.

In game two for Samford, Johnson was 2-for-3 at the plate. David Knapp pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.

For Tennessee Tech in the second game, Michael Roeder went 2-for-2. Michael Alcorn pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to pick up the win.

Samford jumped on top first again in game two with a run in the top of the first inning. Johnson doubled to lead the inning off. Bill Whitehead then singled up the middle to drive in Johnson to give Samford a 1-0 lead.

Tennessee Tech plated three runs in the second inning and one in the third to take a 4-1 lead. The first run in the second inning scored when Thomas Nelson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Roeder for the game-tying run. Jake New then doubled to drive in Mihoci and Henry to make the score 3-1. The run in the third inning scored when Henry singled to center field to drive in Roeder to give the Golden Eagles a three-run lead.

Samford came back with a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Tech lead to 4-2. Marseco grounded out to second base to drive in Johnson for Samford's second run of the game.
