Baseball To Host Morehead State In Weekend OVC Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will play host to Morehead State in a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.

Prior to the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Samford will hold a dedication ceremony for the new Carl E. Miller, Jr. Press Box. The ceremony is set to begin at 12:50 p.m., prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch.

Samford enters the weekend with a record of 29-19 overall and 15-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play after falling at Lipscomb, 4-2, Tuesday evening. Morehead State is currently 16-29 overall and 6-15 in OVC play after being swept by Jacksonville State last weekend.

Samford is led at the plate by Michael Marseco, batting .425 with five home runs and 40 RBI. Michael Rutledge is batting .352 with a team-high 46 RBI. Jonathan Stephens (7-0, 2.28 ERA), Trent Hill (5-3, 4.80 ERA) and Michael Jarry (3-2, 5.20 ERA) are scheduled to start on the mound for Samford.

Drew Lee has led MSU at the plate, batting .324 with 11 doubles and 27 RBI. Michael Bottoms is batting .297 with a team-high 30 RBI. Bottoms (3-3, 5.74 ERA), Tyler Bess (2-7, 6.10 ERA) and Clay Muntz (4-2, 7.16 ERA) are scheduled to start on the mound for MSU.

Since joining the Ohio Valley Conference prior to the 2004 season, Samford is 8-4 in games played against Morehead State. Samford is 6-0 against Morehead State at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Under head coach Casey Dunn, Samford has a record of 5-4 against Morehead State.

Samford needs just two more wins in the regular season to secure at least a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The top two seeds in the tournament receive byes on the first day of the tournament.
