Volleyball Nabs First Conference Win In Sweep Over Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. ---- The Samford University volleyball team grabbed its first Southern Conference win Saturday with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-14) over Davidson. Samford is now on a six-match win streak and improves to 12-2 (1-0 SoCon) while Davidson falls to 4-10 (0-2 SoCon).

Ashley Adams led the Bulldogs with 17 kills, hitting .483 and grabbing five digs. Sheriden Stangohr was right behind hitting a career-high .769. She scored on 10 of 13 attempts, committing no errors. She also had a career-high four aces while also getting two digs and one block solo. Courtney Gay had a team-high seven digs while also grabbing three aces and one assist. Hillary Fountain dished out 39 assists and had six kills, two aces and three digs.

Rachel Gadberry and Kirstein Sosnowski both posted five kills. Gadberry hit a career-high. 625 with no errors and grabbed one block solo. Sara Sears posted four kills and four digs while Sarah Gardner added two assists and five digs and Samantha Bland added one assist and one dig.

"I don't think we played particularly clean," Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said, "but we got our first Southern Conference win and have some things we can improve on next week in practice. I'm very happy with our side-out efficiency and our ability to terminate in transition. We definitely need to dig some more balls so we have some more transition opportunities."

Samford 3, Davidson 0

Adams put the Bulldogs on the board first in set one but the Wildcats made it a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied at each point until Samford took a 9-7 lead. Davidson made a push to tie the score again but the Bulldogs fought back, taking a three-point lead (12-9) on kills by Adams, Sosnowski and Gadberry. The Wildcats took a timeout and came out with a kill by Samford answered right back and pushed its lead to four on back-to-back kills by Sosnowski. Davidson fought back to get within one but Samford would hold its lead and take the first set, 25-22.

Davidson took the first point of the second set but Samford quickly tied the score and took a two-point lead. The Wildcats took a timeout and quickly tied the score but the Bulldogs surged back and went on a 7-0 run take a 15-8 lead on a kill by Sears, two consecutive kills and a block by Stangohr, two kills by Fountain and a couple of Davidson errors. The Wildcats cut the lead to four but after a Samford timeout the Bulldogs took over and grabbed a six-point advantage, winning set two, 25-19.

The Bulldogs grabbed the first point of the third and final set on a kill by Sears and Davidson added to that with an error giving Samford an early two-point advantage. However, the Wildcats soon tied the score and took a two point advantage until the Bulldogs fought back to tie the game at eight. Samford took over on a kill by Stangohr and never looked back. The Bulldogs continued to dominate, charging ahead and claiming the final set, 25-14.
