Final Stats
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ---- The Samford softball team was handed its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon as a late rally by Western Kentucky lifted the Hilltoppers over the Bulldogs, 4-3, in the first game of day three in the Southern Miss Invitational.
Samford scored one run in the second to tie the game at one run a piece before Western Kentucky took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs brought in two runs, though, in the bottom of the fifth inning when Amanda Barrs doubles to right center field to bring in Katie England and Jessica Owens, both of whom were put in position by a WKU fielding error.
The Bulldogs saw extra innings again Sunday when Western Kentucky scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at three and then kept Samford from scoring in the bottom of that inning to send it to an eight inning. The Hilltoppers did that once more to take a 4-3 lead and walk away with the victory.
Samford plays again at 1 p.m. as it takes on Arkansas out of the Southeastern Conference. Live stats are available at www.southernmiss.com and a full recap of both games and results will be available at www.samfordsports.com at the conclusion of that game.
