The Samford University men's tennis team squared off against one of the toughest squads in the Southern Conference on Tuesday and fell short in a 5-2 decision versus the UNC Greensboro Spartans at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the loss, Samford (2-9, 1-2 SoCon) dropped its second-straight contest against a SoCon opponent. After defeating Davidson in their inaugural SoCon match in school history on March 1, the Bulldogs have lost consecutive matchups to No. 75 Elon and UNC Greensboro (6-2, 2-0 SoCon).
The Spartans earned their third-straight victory on Tuesday and picked up their second in a row against a SoCon opponent. On Sunday, UNC Greensboro dominated Chattanooga en route to a 7-0 sweep held on the road in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Samford earned both of its points in singles play as sophomores Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds were both victorious against their Spartan counterparts.
In the No. 4 singles match, the Bulldogs' Abalos breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 victory against UNC Greensboro's William John. With the win, Abalos improved to 3-5 when playing on court No. 4 this season.
Samford's Reynolds also tallied a straight-set victory Tuesday. On court No. 6, the Bulldogs' native of McDonough, Ga., defeated the Spartans' Jacob Wright 6-3, 6-2. With his lopsided win, Reynolds improved to 4-3 on court No. 6 this season.
The Samford men's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m., as the Bulldogs step out of conference play to host the Murray State Racers at the Samford Tennis Center.
