The Samford women's tennis team picked up one of its most impressive wins of the 2009 season Monday as the Bulldogs cruised to a 5-2 victory against the Murray State Racers at the Samford Tennis Center.
Samford (3-6), despite competing with only five healthy players, won the doubles point and then picked up victories in the top four singles matches to take the 5-2 triumph. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 3-4 when playing at home this season.
Murray State (6-3) suffered its second-straight defeat and dropped to 3-4 when playing on the road. On Sunday, the Racers fell short in a similar 5-2 loss to UAB.
In doubles play Monday, Samford secured the match's opening point with wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2.
The Bulldogs' tandem of Taylor Morgan and Stephanie Parkison earned an 8-6 victory against the Racers' Anne Pennington and Angela McGaheen on court No. 1, while Samford's pair of Jessica Diamond and Andrie Meiring outlasted Murray State's duo comprised of Adriana Alvarez and Lyndsay Ottosen 8-5 on court No. 2.
Samford's Meiring tallied her fifth-consecutive victory in doubles play Monday.
Meiring also earned her third-straight singles win. On court No. 2, she breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Murray State's Cassidy Cunitz. The Bulldogs' Morgan, Parkison and Diamond also rallied for straight-set victories in singles play.
Morgan won 6-4, 6-1 on court No. 1, while Parkison tallied a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court No. 3 and Diamond defeated the Racers' Alexis Webb 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles competition.
The Samford women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at 10 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs resume Southern Conference play with a pivotal league matchup against the Furman Lady Paladins on the road in Greenville, S.C.
