CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ---- The Samford softball team dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader at Chattanooga. An eighth inning three-run home run lifted the Lady Mocs over the Bulldogs, 6-3, in game one while the second game was a one-run decision (1-0) which went Chattanooga's way.
In game one, Samford (8-14, 2-5 SoCon) got on the board first after Kylie Harmon reached base after being hit. She stole second base and then was brought in on a double by Amanda Barrs. The Bulldogs kept Chattanooga (13-11, 4-0 SoCon) scoreless for the next two innings before the Lady Mocs added a run to their column in the third and fourth innings, both runs were brought in on doubles by Jenni Martin and Lyndsey Stiles.
Samford tied the score in the top of the fifth when Amanda Jordan scored after Barrs reached base on an error by the shortstop with runners on second and third.
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning for Chattanooga, Samford took a 3-2 lead when Jordan reached base and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop which brought Aaren Fisher in. However, the Lady Mocs tied the game and forced an eighth inning after a double by Tia Blosser and a scoreless seventh inning for both teams.
Chattanooga allowed one hit in the eighth by the Bulldogs but kept them from bringing it in. In the bottom of the inning, there were Lady Mocs on first and third and two outs when Tiffany Baker came to the plate. Baker homered and Chattanooga took game one, 6-3.
Barrs (2-6) took the loss for the Bulldogs after pitching a complete game of 7.2 innings. She struck out two batters while walking five and gave up six earned runs on 11 hits. Kylie Harmon was a perfect three-of-three at the plate while Barrs, Robyn Harmon and Whitney Terry all were one-of-four.
Kandice Irwin (5-6) got the win for Chattanooga after pitching the final two innings for the Lady Mocs. Brooke Loudermilk started for the Lady Mocs, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Kaity Holloway relieved Loudermilk, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up one run on one hit, before Irwin was brought in.
"In the first game we had chances to score and could not deliver the knockout punch," Samford head coach Beanie Ketcham said. "When you let a good team stay in the game long enough, they will find a way to win. We didn't put them away when we had the chance.
"In the second game, we played well but just could not get anything going offensively. I thought we would hit the ball a little better, but we have seen all of their pitching so hopefully we will adjust and get some timely hits tomorrow.
"Game two was one of the quickest games the Bulldogs have played so far this season. Both teams got three outs quickly in the first inning - Samford had one player walked while Chattanooga left a player on base after reaching on a double.
Chattanooga got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on second and third, Stiles singled to bring in Martin. The score was 1-0 and that is how it would end after a scoreless rest of the game.
Stephanie Royall (3-6) took the loss in game two, pitching a complete game of six innings. She matched a season-high five strikeouts while walking two and giving up just one earned run on seven hits. Michelle Fuzzard (5-4) grabbed the win for the Lady Mocs after pitching a complete seven innings. She struck out three, walked two and gave up only three hits. Amy Gonzalez, Kylie Harmon and Fisher were all one-of-three at the plate.
