Samford's Michael Jarry pitched 8.0 innings, giving up just one run and striking out five batters as the Bulldogs won, 13-1, at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference series at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The second game of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain and the teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday.
Samford improves to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in SoCon play with the win. UNC Greensboro drops to ¬7-11 overall and 0-5 in league play.
For Samford at the plate, Bo Smith was 2-for-3 with a grand slam, a double and five RBI. Marcus Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in a 1-for-2 performance. Wayne Miller and Trey Hayes had two hits each for the Bulldogs.
Jarry earned the win on the mound, improving to 2-3 on the season. Grant Sides pitched the final inning for the Bulldogs.
UNC Greensboro was led at the plate by Pedro Leon, going 2-for-4. Corey Overholtzer drove in the Spartans' lone run of the game in a 1-for-4 performance. Greg Martin pitched 4.1 innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits to take the loss and drop his season record to 1-4.
Samford jumped on top with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. The majority of the damage in the inning came on a three-run homer by Rodriguez with Mason Meredeth and Hayes on base. Hayes had driven in a run with a single earlier in the inning.
Samford added five runs in the fifth inning to push its lead to 9-0. Smith hit a grand slam with Miller, Stephen Ballard and Meredeth on base to make the score 8-0. Hayes later scored on a wild pitch for a nine-run Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 11-0. Meredeth reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to second base on an error, with Miller scoring from third base on the error for a 10-0 Samford lead. After moving to third base on a ground out, Meredeth scored when Smith doubled to right-center field for the final run of the inning.
Samford plated two final runs in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 13-0. After Meredeth walked and Stewart Young singled, pinch-hitter Joe Durham tripled down the right-field line to drive in Meredeth and Young for Samford's final two runs of the game.
UNC Greensboro plated its lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Leon led the inning off with a triple and then scored on a single by Overholtzer to make the final score 13-1.
Samford and UNCG will wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
