The Samford women's golf team registered its sixth top-five finish of the 2008-09 season on Tuesday as the Bulldogs placed second out of 16 teams at the highly-competitive USA Lady Jaguar Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama.
At the Azalea City Golf Club (par 72, 6,051 yards), Samford fired a third-round score of 305 to finish the two-day competition with a total team score of 918. Florida International won the three-round event with a final team tally of 895.
The Bulldogs' Katelyn Stanier paced the team with a 54-hole score of 224 (77-72-75). Samford's highly-decorated native of Newnan, Ga., finished the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational as the third-place player in the tournament. Stanier carded a team-best 75 on Monday.
Sarah Butts also earned a top-10 finish in the individual rankings. The Bulldogs' true freshman from Carrollton, Ga., tallied a three-round score of 231 (78-77-76) and concluded the two-day event in a tie for ninth place.
Samford's Sara Hunt fired her second 76 of the tournament Tuesday and finished the tournament in 15th place with a final score of 232 (76-80-76). The Bulldogs' junior from Columbia, Tenn., proved to be the third Samford player to finish in the top 15 this week.
Senior Maria Troche and junior Heather Arnold turned in identical third-round scores of 78 on Tuesday. Both Bulldogs finished the two-day tournament tied for 27th place with final scores of 238.
The Samford women's golf team will next be in action March 16-17 as the Bulldogs play host to the 2009 Samford Intercollegiate Tournament which will be held at Limestone Spring Golf Course in Oneonta, Ala.
