The Samford baseball team was swept in a Southern Conference doubleheader at Appalachian State on Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped game one, 6-4 and game two by a score of 4-3.
With the losses, Samford drops to 11-23 overall and 7-10 in SoCon play. Appalachian State improves to 16-16 overall and 7-11 in league games with the wins.
In the first game, Appalachian State won by a score of 6-4. For Samford in the game, Bo Smith was 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Joe Durham was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Mason Meredeth went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs.
Michael Jarry pitched 7.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits and striking out six batters to take the loss.
For Appalachian State in game one, Wes Hobson was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. David Towarnicky went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Nick DeRose went 2-for-4 for the Mountaineers.
Matt Andress pitched 7.2 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out six batters to earn the win. Zach Quate pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save for the Mountaineers.
Samford took an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning. Smith singled with two outs. After moving to second base when David Schulze walked, Smith scored when Durham singled up the middle for a 1-0 Samford lead.
Appalachian State took its first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hobson doubled down the right field line to drive in Jerod Faggart and DeRose to make the score 2-1.
Samford took the lead back with two runs in the top of the third inning to make the score 3-2. After Meredeth reached on an infield single, Smith homered to right field to give Samford the lead.
Appalachian State tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Towarnicky singled to drive in Hobson to make the score 3-3.
The Mountaineers took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hobson singled to drive in Jeremy Dowdy, and Jason Wallace scored on the play on a Samford error for a 5-3 ASU lead.
Samford cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Smith led the inning off with a home run to right-center field to pull the Bulldogs to within one run.'
ASU plated another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 6-4. Hobson doubled to center field to drive in Rand Smith for the game's final run.
In game two of the doubleheader, ASU's Rand Smith singled to drive in Ryan Arrowood with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Mountaineers the 4-3 win.
Samford was led in game two by Stephen Ballard going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Meredeth was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Brad Moss was 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs. Kyle Nichols pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits to take the loss.
For ASU in game two, Smith was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Isaac Harrow went 3-for-4 for the Mountaineers in game two. Quate pitched the final third of an inning to earn the win on the mound.
ASU got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Will Helms scored the first run of the game on a Samford error. Smith later singled to drive in Faggart for a two-run ASU lead.
Samford cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Moss doubled to lead off the inning. After moving to third base on a ground out, Moss scored on a sacrifice fly by Meredeth.
Samford plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. Michael Johnson singled to lead off the inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Moss. Ballard then tripled to drive in Johnson to tie the score. Samford took the lead when Meredeth singled to drive in Ballard.
ASU tied the score with one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith singled to drive in Arrowood, who had singled to lead off the inning, to tie the score at 3-3.
Neither team could plate a run in the eighth inning, setting the stage for the decisive ninth inning.
