BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford women's tennis team extended its winning streak against Southern Conference opponents to three-consecutive matches Saturday as the Bulldogs rallied for a 5-2 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts at the Samford Tennis Center.
In the win, Samford (7-9, 4-3 SoCon) dropped the doubles point, but rolled to five-straight triumphs in singles play, four of which occurred in straight sets.
The Bulldogs' Taylor Morgan, Andrie Meiring, Stephanie Parkison, Jessica Diamond and Beth Erwin were all victorious in singles play Saturday. Meiring's three-set win on court No. 2 proved to be her fourth-consecutive singles victory. In her last 10 matches in singles play, Meiring has been triumphant in eight of the contests.
With the loss, Western Carolina (4-13, 0-8 SoCon) suffered its fifth straight defeat. The Catamounts won the doubles point Saturday as Layne Arnold and Izabella Glinska earned an 8-5 victory on court No. 2. Western Carolina was also victorious in the No. 3 doubles match where it won by default.
Samford was forced to compete in Saturday's match with only five healthy players, therefore the Bulldogs had to default in both the No. 3 doubles competition and the No. 6 singles match.
In the No. 1 doubles contest, Samford's tandem of Morgan and Parkison cruised to an 8-1 victory.
The Bulldogs then rallied for five-consecutive singles wins. On court No. 1, Morgan defeated the Catamounts' Glinska, 6-3, 6-0, while Parkison tallied a 6-2, 7-5 victory on court No. 3 against Ainhoa Iglesias.
Along with Meiring's win on court No. 2, Samford's Diamond added a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 singles match and fellow true freshman Erwin tallied a 6-2, 6-3 triumph on court No. 5.
The Samford women's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at noon as the Bulldogs play host to the UNC Greensboro Spartans in the final match of their critical SoCon homestand to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
