The Samford baseball team dropped the third game of its Southern Conference series at Appalachian State, 6-3, Sunday afternoon.
Samford drops to 11-24 overall and 7-11 in SoCon play with the loss. Appalachian State improves to 17-16 overall and 8-11 in league play.
Andrew Jones pitched 6.2 innings, giving up six runs on 13 hits to take the loss for Samford. Mason Meredeth and David Schulze each homered in the game for Samford. Meredeth was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Schulze was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Appalachian State's Aubrey Edens pitched 7.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits to earn the win. Isaac Harrow hit a three-run home run and drove in a total of four runs in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. Rand Smith, David Towarnicky, Chris Alessandria and Nick DeRose had two hits each for the Mountaineers.
Samford got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first inning. Wayne Miller singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an ASU error to give Samford a 1-0 lead.
After Appalachian State tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second inning, Samford regained the lead with a run in the top of the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Meredeth hit a solo home run to left-center field for a 2-1 Samford lead.
Appalachian State took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After Smith doubled and Wes Hobson walked, Harrow hit a home run to right field to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 lead.
The Mountaineers added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 5-2. Jerod Faggart doubled to lead off the inning. Hobson then singled and Faggart moved to third base. Faggart then scored when Harrow hit a sacrifice fly to center field for a three-run ASU lead.
Samford plated a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-3. Schulze homered to left field with one out to close to within two runs.
ASU added one final run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 6-3. Towarnicky singled to lead off the inning. Alessandria then walked and Towarnicky moved to second base. After two straight outs Jeremy Dowdy hit a sacrifice fly and Towarnicky scored from third base for the game's final run.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, when the Bulldogs play host to Georgia State at 4 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs will also play host to Alabama Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
