ELON, N.C. - The Samford women's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory against the Wofford Terriers on Thursday in the opening round of play at the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament being held at the Burlington Tennis Center in nearby Burlington, N.C. Sophomore Taylor Morgan clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 singles victory on court No. 1.

With the win, Samford (8-12) advanced to Friday's second round of action where the Bulldogs will face off against the second-seeded College of Charleston Cougars at noon (CDT). The upcoming SoCon matchup will be held at Elon University's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Samford played Thursday's match with five healthy players and was forced to forfeit matches at the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions. Due to a rash of serious injuries this season, the Bulldogs have been playing with only five healthy student-athletes since Feb. 26.

Despite forfeiting the No. 3 doubles match, Samford rallied to a pair of identical 8-4 victories on courts No. 1 and No. 2.

In the No. 1 contest, the Bulldogs' combination of Stephanie Parkison and Morgan defeated the Terriers' tandem of Cayley Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence, while Samford's duo comprised of Andrie Meiring and Jessica Diamond knocked off Wofford's Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers on court No. 2. With Meiring and Diamond's victory, the pair improved to 13-2 on the season.

Earlier on Thursday, the Bulldogs' Meiring and Diamond both received SoCon Second-Team doubles honors.

Samford closed out its victory over Wofford with singles wins from Meiring, Parkison and Morgan, while Diamond was leading 6-1, 4-1 in her contest on court No. 4. Meiring defeated the Terriers' Lawrence on court No. 2, 6-0, 6-3, and Parkison breezed by Baird in the No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-0.

With the loss, Wofford concluded its 2009 season with a 2-20 record.

The Samford women's tennis team will next be in action Friday at noon (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against the second-seeded College of Charleston Cougars in the second round of the 2009 SoCon Tournament being held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
