Samford Volleyball Holds Inaugural Fundraiser

July 27, 2009

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University volleyball team hosted its inaugural Team Challenge on Saturday, July 17. The program invited fellow student-athletes as well as people from the community for a day of fun and games in support of the Samford volleyball program.

Teams competed in games such as Whack-a-Dex.

"We raised a couple hundred dollars this year and everyone had such a great time," Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said. "I'm sure it will be much bigger next year.

The event, hosted by Shadowlake Driving Range, pitted teams against each another in fun activities including volleyball, golf, corn hole and carpentry.

"More than anything, it was great to get the players out in the local volleyball community," Schroeder said. "They are such a special group of kids that having them get involved with a group of local supporters will strengthen our ties in the community."

The program plans to have the Team Challenge in the spring next year, surrounding one of its spring tournaments.

"I was pleased with how much fun everyone had at our inaugural event," Schroeder said. "This type of fundraiser has huge potential and should grow every year."
