CHARLESTON, S.C. ---- The Samford University volleyball team dropped its second consecutive Southern Conference match Saturday in a 3-0 loss at College of Charleston. The Cougars won three straight - 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 - but not without a fight from the Bulldogs.
"The scores were unfortunate as we really dictated a good chunk of that match," Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said. "We had 37 more total attempts and were in system often, making good setting decisions. We just could not terminate anything. College of Charleston played great defense and, as always, blocked very well. Our ball control players were the best they have been on the road."
Samford (8-13, 2-5 SoCon) was led by Elizabeth Neisler. The sophomore outside hitter posted 12 kills, two digs and three block assists. Lauren Hutchinson followed with six kills, two digs and three block assists while Samantha Bland, Katie Murphy, Shelby Brandon and Taylor Palmer each had five kills. Bland also posted five digs, two assists and two block assists while Murphy added an assist and three block assists and Brandon added a dig and a block assist.
Casey Garvey led the Bulldogs in assists with 24 while Hillary Fountain had eight. Garvey also led in digs, along with Alexis Bauer. The pair posted seven digs each. Fountain added a kill and three digs while Lyndsey Holt had two digs, an assist and an ace.
College of Charleston (17-5, 6-1 SoCon) was led by Elyse Chubb who posted 11 kills and hit .500. She also added a solo block and a block assist. Whitney Russell was just behind with 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage while also adding seven digs. Cole Dawley posted a double-double, dishing out 29 assists and 10 digs while also adding two kills, an ace, a solo block and three block assists.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Sunday when they take on the Bulldogs of The Citadel. Charleston took a quick 3-1 lead in the first set but a kill by Neisler, an error by the Cougars and a block by Bland and Murphy quickly tied the score at four. Back-to-back kills by Brandon and Bland gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead, but the Cougars eventually came back to tie the score at 10. The score was tied three more times before Charleston took a two-point lead on a kill by Sarah Havel and a Bulldog error. With the Cougars leading 16-14, Samford called a timeout.
A 4-2 run by Charleston out of the break put the Cougars up by four and Samford quickly called another timeout. Samford fought to cut the lead back to two with the help of kills by Hutchinson and Brandon, but with the score at 22-20, Samford would only score one more point on a kill by Bland, and the Cougars went on to win set one, 25-21.
Samford played Charleston close to begin the second set before the Cougars took a four-point lead on a Samford error. Samford called a timeout and Hutchinson came back with a kill and then a block, along with Bland, to cut the lead back to two. However, the Cougars put together a 5-1 run to take a six-point lead and Samford called another timeout. The teams traded kills four times and Samford tried to keep within five points, but Charleston soon pulled away and went on a 4-0 run to take a nine-point lead. Samford held the Cougars at set point twice on a kill by Neisler and an ace by Holt, but a kill by Chubb would put the set away for the Cougars, 25-17.
Neisler grabbed the first point for the Bulldogs in the third set with a kill but the Cougars answered back with a kill of their own. Samford then took a three-point lead on kills by Brandon and Bland and a Charleston error but the Cougars came right back to take an 8-7 lead and force Samford to call a timeout. Neisler answered back with a kill to tie the score at eight but Charleston would not give up its lead and immediately answered with a block and a kill.
Samford called another timeout but and the Bulldogs came back with a block from Neisler and Hutchinson to get within one. Russell scored a kill for Charleston but Neisler answered with a kill of her own. However, Charleston would score three straight kills to go ahead by four. After a Cougar service error to make the score 14-11, Charleston went on a 5-0 run to move ahead by eight. The Bulldogs fought to cut the lead to four but Charleston would go on to win set three, 25-18.
