Bulldogs Take Undefeated Streak To Georgia Southern

Oct. 23, 2010

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Samford University soccer team will continue its regular-season-ending road trip Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against the Georgia Southern Eagles in a key Southern Conference matchup held at Eagle Field.

Samford (10-5-2, 6-2-1 SoCon) enters the contest after playing to a 0-0 draw at Davidson on Friday. With the scoreless tie, the Bulldogs extended their SoCon undefeated streak to seven-consecutive matches. Samford remained undefeated since Sept. 26 and moved its record to 6-0-1 in the Bulldogs' previous seven outings.

Samford opened its three-match, regular-season-ending conference road trip Friday and improved its record to 3-3-1 in contests away from home this season.

The Bulldogs' draw was only their second of the 2010 campaign. On Aug. 27, in Samford's third match of the young season, the Bulldogs played to a 2-2 draw with Mercer at Bulldog Field.

Against Davidson on Friday, Samford outshot the Wildcats 19-8 and led Davidson in shots on goal 5-1. The Bulldogs' true freshman Michelle Moll paced Samford with six shots attempts. Senior Paige Lanter and junior Sarah Wilkinson both followed with three shots apiece.

Georgia Southern (5-10, 2-7 SoCon) heads into Sunday's duel with aspirations of snapping a five-match losing streak. Since playing to a momentous 2-1 victory against Elon on Oct. 3, the Eagles have been defeated in consecutive contests versus Western Carolina 2-0, Appalachian State 1-0, The Citadel 2-1, College of Charleston 2-0 and Chattanooga 4-1.

In Friday's 4-1 home defeat to Chattanooga, Georgia Southern held the halftime lead with a goal from Courtney Collins, but the Lady Mocs tallied four second-half goals to defeat the Eagles 4-1 at Eagle Field. Donna-Kay Henry scored three of the Lady Mocs' four goals to secure the SoCon win for Chattanooga.

Georgia Southern's Collins and Sara Oland teamed up to put the Eagles in front 1-0 in the first half. Oland set up a nice crossing pass to Collins in position who found the back of the net with a shot up the middle at 14:40. The goal marked Collins' first of the season.

Samford owns a 5-0-1 all-time record against Georgia Southern. The rivalry began in the Bulldogs' inaugural season in 1997 as the teams played to a scoreless draw. Since then, Samford has rattled off victories against the Eagles in 1999 (2-1), 2003 (1-0), 2007 (1-0), 2008 (1-0) and 2009 (5-0).

In last season's 5-0 victory held at Bulldog Field, Samford received goals from Amber Cress, Natalie Fleming, Leah Leppert (2) and Hilary Samuels.

Following Sunday's road match at Georgia Southern, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs conclude their regular-season schedule with a rivalry contest against the Chattanooga Lady Mocs. The matchup will be held at Chattanooga's North River Complex in Chattanooga, Tenn.
