The Samford University soccer team extended its undefeated streak to eight-consecutive matches Sunday as the Bulldogs earned a 3-0 victory on the road against the Georgia Southern Eagles. In the win, which was held at Eagle Field, Samford received all of its goals from true freshmen Katie Proud, Trine Taule and Michelle Moll.
With the victory, Samford (11-5-2, 7-2-1 SoCon) remained undefeated since Sept. 26 and tallied its seventh win in its previous eight outings. The Bulldogs' lone draw was a 0-0 tie at Davidson on Friday.
All three of Samford's goals Sunday were scored by true freshmen. Proud, the Bulldogs' speedy forward from Knoxville, Tenn., tallied the game-winning goal during the 32nd minute of play. The score was Proud's fourth of the 2010 campaign and was assisted by Lauren Cook. The assist was Cook's fifth of the season.
Samford took a 1-0 lead into the half and then received a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes of play to register its 3-0 triumph.
The Bulldogs' Taule scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season during the 62nd minute, while Moll quickly followed with her second score of the year in the 69th minute. Both Taule and Moll's goals were unassisted.
With the loss, Georgia Southern (5-12, 2-8 SoCon) remained winless in its all-time series with Samford and dropped its sixth-consecutive match. The Eagles have not been victorious since a momentous 2-1 victory against Elon on Oct. 3. The Bulldogs improved their all-time record against Georgia Southern to 6-0-1.
Samford goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead set a school record Sunday as she notched her 11th shutout of the season. The Bulldogs' 6-foot-3 native of Hattiesburg, Miss., has already set the all-time record in the category and now bested her previous single-season mark of 10, which was set last year.
With at least two more matches to play this season, Whitehead has already tallied a school-record 11 shutouts in 2010.
In Sunday's contest at Georgia Southern, Samford outshot the Eagles 17-2. The Bulldogs also dominated the corner kick category by finishing with 11 as compared to none for Georgia Southern.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs conclude their regular-season schedule with a rivalry contest against the Chattanooga Lady Mocs. The matchup will be held at Chattanooga's North River Complex in Chattanooga, Tenn.
