The Samford University soccer team tallied its largest margin of victory in nearly 10 years Sunday as the Bulldogs streaked to a 7-0 triumph against the first-place The Citadel at MLI Field. Samford received goals from Sarah Wilkinson, Lauren Cook, Leah Leppert, Katie Proud and Hilary Samuels, as well as a pair of scores from Trine Taule in the win.
With the decisive victory, Samford (6-5-1, 2-2 SoCon) tallied its second straight win and recorded its most lopsided triumph since an 11-0 decision against Trevecca Nazarene on Oct. 7, 2000. The Bulldogs scored their first goal of the match in the 12th minute of play as Wilkinson tallied her third score in two outings.
Samford led Sunday's contest 1-0 at the half, but then exploded for six second-half scores.
The Citadel (7-4-1, 3-1 SoCon) had its five-match winning snapped Sunday and the Bulldogs suffered their first defeat since a 3-0 loss to Lipscomb on Sept. 12. Prior to the defeat, The Citadel had rattled off consecutive victories against South Carolina State 4-1, Charleston Southern 4-1, Western Carolina 2-1, Appalachian State 2-1 and Chattanooga 2-0.
Wilkinson scored the game-winning goal and continued her hot streak early in Sunday's match as she gave Samford a quick 1-0 lead with a goal during the 12th minute of play. The score proved to be her third in the last two matches. Against College of Charleston on Friday, Wilkinson tallied both goals in a key 2-0 SoCon victory.
After leading 1-0 at the half, Samford came out on fire in the second period and rattled off goals from Cook, Leppert, Proud, Samuels and a pair from true freshman Taule.
The Bulldogs closed out the weekend by outscoring their opponents by a total of 9-0. On Friday, Samford registered a key 2-0 victory against College of Charleston.
Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead tallied her second shutout of the weekend and notched her sixth of the 2010 campaign. The Bulldogs' 6-foot-3 native of Hattiesburg, Miss., recorded four key saves in Sunday's victory.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Thursday at 6 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs close out their three-match SoCon road trip against the Wofford Terriers in Spartanburg, S.C.
