Monica Maxwell Named SoCon Player Of The Week

Feb. 16, 2010

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford senior guard Monica Maxwell was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Week when the league released its weekly women's basketball awards on Tuesday.

In two games last week, Maxwell averaged 18.5 points per game as the Bulldogs posted a 1-1 record in those games. She added 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.

In the Bulldogs' 73-57 win against Davidson Saturday, Maxwell matched her career high with 22 points. She made eight of her 12 shots from the floor, including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point arc.

Against Appalachian State, Maxwell scored 15 points, all of which came from beyond the three-point line. Her five three-pointers in the game gave her 206 for her career, which broke Chelsee Insell's previous record of 202.

Maxwell now sits at 999 career points and is one point shy of becoming the sixth player in Samford history to score at least 1,000 points in her career.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they travel to Western Carolina. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from WCU's Ramsey Center.
