SoCon Indoor Day One Results
CLEMSON, S.C. ---- At the conclusion of the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships, the Samford men (55.5 points) are currently in third place while the women (20 points) are is sixth. Western Carolina (62 points) leads the field for the men followed by Appalachian State (60 points) and the Mountaineers (53 points) are currently in first place on the women's side followed by Western Carolina (50 points).
Samford dominated the men's pole vault for the fifth week in a row. Michael Seaman won the event with a height of 16-07.50. The mark broke the SoCon record set in 1998 by Appalachian State's Todd Poremba. Patrick Wells (16-01.75) grabbed second place while Zac Epperson took fifth with a personal best of 15-01.75). Ryan Cooke placed sixth with a vault of 14-08.00 and Chas Keithan (14-02.00) and Brandon Bassett (14-02.00) placed eighth and ninth with personal best marks.
In the women's distance medley relay, Samford (Jessica Van Ausdall, Ashley Bridenbaugh, Lauren D'Alessio and Hillary Neal) finished first a time of 11:24.73. The race was stopped with one lap to go so the time does not reflect the full length of the race. The men's DMR team (Scott Cope, Ramsey White, Will Denton and Blaise Carie) finished fourth with a time of 10:18.44.
In the women's pentathlon, freshman Emily Allen took seventh place while sophomore Christian McGuire placed 10th and junior Elyse Rippe came in 12th place. Allen took 10th in the 60-meter hurdles (10.06) but posted personal bests in four other events. She tied for third in the high jump (5-01.00), took fourth in the shot put (31-10.75), sixth in the long jump (16-09.75) and seventh in the 800 meters (2:39.19).
McGuire placed sixth in the 800 meters (2:38.11) and the shot put with a personal best of 31-08.75 while tying for eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best of 9.54. She also placed 11th in the high jump (4-06.00) and long jump (15-00.50).
Rippe placed ninth in the high jump (4-08.25), 10th in the 800 meters (2:41.35) and 12th in the 60-meter hurdles (11.98) and the shot put (25-04.00). She fouled in the long jump.
Four events of the men's heptathlon were held Thursday. The final three will kick off Friday's competition.
Sophomore Donald Cooper won the men's heptathlon 60-meter dash with a time of 7.15before taking fifth in the long jump (20-04.25), ninth in the shot put (31-11.25) and tying for third in the high jump (6-04.25).
Freshman Brandon Bassett took seventh in the shot put with a toss of 36-00.00 and fifth in the high jump with a mark of 6-03.25. He recorded personal bests in the other two events. He placed fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.44) and the won the long jump (22-05.25).
Freshman Bo Ackerson-Gilroy posted personal bests in all four events. He placed second in the high jump (6-08.00) and long jump (21-02.00) and also took third in the shot put (38-08.25) and seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.53).
In the track events, Morgan Tyler placed seventh and qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best of 8.88 for the women. Julie McDonald finished 10th and just missed the qualifying mark, but ran a personal best of 9.13. On the men's side, Ackerson-Gilroy and Cavan Corcoran qualified for the finals as well. Corcoran took second in the preliminaries with a time of 8.43 while Ackerson-Gilroy placed sixth with a time of 8.58.
Neal, Holly Benson and D'Alessio all qualified for the finals of the women's 800-meter run. D'Alessio placed fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:19.94 followed closely by Neal in fifth with a time of 2:21.50. Benson finished seventh with a personal best time of 2:15.10.
In the men's 800 meters, Cope and Keithan will compete in the finals tomorrow. Cope placed fifth in the preliminaries with a personal best of 1:54.43 while Keithan placed eighth with a personal best of 1:56.74. Denton finished ninth with a time of 1:57.38 while White placed 16th with a time of 2:01.03.
Ina Ables placed ninth in the women's 3000 meters with a time of 10:25.33. Deanna Zidar placed 13th (10:47.25) followed by Jillian Klassen (11:07.56) in 18th place and Alli Keithan (11:08.24) in 19th place. On the men's side, Cameron Bean set a new school record with his event winning time of 8:15.74. Carie placed seventh with a time of 8:30.75.
Riley Hawkins took 10th in the 60-meter dash with a time of personal best time of 7.05.
In the women's 200 meters preliminaries, Ashley Dance placed 14th with a time of 26.50 while McDonald (27.35) placed 19th and Leslie Graff (27.41) took 19th place. In the men's event, Cooper qualified for the finals with a personal best and sixth place time of 22.38. Zac Cordner placed 15th with a time of 22.89 while Brad Bostic came in 20th with a time of 24.12.
In the women's 400 meters preliminaries, Tatum Moffett just placed 10th with a personal best time of 59.50 while Dance came in 12th with a time of 59.71. Neither qualified for finals. On the men's side, Cordner qualified for finals personal best time of 50.53 to finish sixth place in the preliminaries. Bostic placed 13th with a personal best of 54.03.
In the field events, freshman Chenelle Terry placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5-06.00.
Tyler took ninth place in the women's long jump with a mark of 17-09.00 while Allen placed 17th with a leap of 16-03.75.
Cooper grabbed third place in the men's high jump with a personal best of 6-06.25 while Ackerson-Gilroy tied for fourth place with a leap of 6-06.25 and Bassett placed ninth with a mark of 6-02.25.
Chris Davis placed 10th in the shot put with a toss of 41-10.75.
Competition resumes at 8:15 a.m. CT, Friday morning with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meters. The day's events with round out with the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays at 3:10 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow at approximately 3:40 p.m.
