CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -
The Samford women's basketball team will conclude its regular season with a key Southern Conference game at Chattanooga Saturday evening at 6 p.m. (CT).
Samford enters the game with a record of 20-8 overall and 14-5 in Southern Conference play after a 53-42 win at Western Carolina on Feb. 20. Chattanooga is currently 20-8 overall and 15-4 in league play after a 51-49 loss in overtime at Western Carolina on Feb. 22.
A win by Samford in Saturday's game would give the Bulldogs a share of their first conference championship. The Bulldogs would share the title with Chattanooga, and possibly Appalachian State, if the Mountaineers win at Georgia Southern on Saturday. Due to Samford's record against Chattanooga and Appalachian State, the Bulldogs would win the tie-breaker and earn the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament.
If Samford loses to Chattanooga, and Appalachian State loses to Georgia Southern, then Samford and ASU would be tied for second place, and Samford would earn the No. 2 seed. If Samford loses to Chattanooga, and Appalachian State wins at Georgia Southern, Samford would earn the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
Samford is led in scoring by junior guard Emily London, averaging 15.5 points per game. London currently ranks second in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, making 51.4 percent of her attempts. London, who had missed the previous five games with a knee injury, returned to the lineup in last Saturday's win at Western Carolina. In the win, London had three points, five rebounds and one assist.
Junior forward Savannah Hill is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.1 points per game. Hill leads the Bulldogs in rebounds (5.2 rpg.) and assists (3.3 apg.). Senior guard Monica Maxwell averages 10.0 points per game. She is second on the team in rebounding with an average of 4.5 boards per contest.
The Lady Mocs are led by Shanara Hollinquest, averaging 16.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Jenaya Wade-Fray averages 13.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Entering Saturday's game, Samford leads the Southern Conference in several statistical categories. The Bulldogs currently lead the league in scoring margin (+7.1 ppg.), free throw percentage (.758), three-point field goal percentage (.370), rebounding defense (33.4 rpg.), assist/turnover ratio (1.0) and three-pointers made per game (8.3 pg.).
Samford and Chattanooga are meeting for the 10th time, with Chattanooga holding a 7-2 advantage in the series. Earlier this season, on Nov. 30, Samford defeated Chattanooga, 74-52 at the Pete Hanna Center. The game was the conference opener for both teams.
