The Samford men's track and field team finished third, while the women's team came in fourth in the Southern Conference Indoor Championships, which concluded Friday at the Clemson Indoor Track and Clemson University.
"We did a good job for the most part of staying consistent this weekend," Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. "I feel our women's team has to develop a little more depth but for the most part I was extremely happy with our effort."
Samford picked up two of the league's men's postseason awards. Cameron Bean was named Most Outstanding Track Performer and Tiffin was named Co-Coach of the Year, along with Danny Williamson of Western Carolina.
"Cameron Bean did a great job this weekend and it's always great to have the other coaches recognize that and vote him Most Outstanding Track Performer," Tiffin said. "I was also extremely humbled to be named Coach of the Year and it only emphasizes the great job our men's team is doing."
Other student-athletes to win individual awards on the men's side were Western Carolina's Cordell Livingston (Most Outstanding Athlete and Freshman of the Year) and Matt Evans (Most Outstanding Field Performer).
On the women's side, Williamson was named Coach of the Year. WCU's Jane't Carothers was named Most Outstanding Athlete and Most Outstanding Track Performer. Lynndsey Hyter of Georgia Southern and WCU's Deirdra Morrison were named Co-Most Outstanding Field Performers. Appalachian State's Trinity Foreman was named Freshman of the Year.
The Samford men's team finished third with 120.5 points, behind Appalachian State (209 pts.) and Western Carolina (207 pts.). On the women's side, Samford amassed 77 points, coming in behind Western Carolina (174.5 pts.), Appalachian State (122 pts.) and Georgia Southern (95 pts.).
Over the two-day event, the Samford men's team had eight student-athletes earn 16 All-Conference honors. The women's team had seven student-athletes earn nine All-Conference accolades.
Bean won the 5,000-meter run on Friday after taking the 3,000-meter run on Thursday. Bean finished the 5,000-meters in 14:29.12.
Also on Friday, freshman Brandon Bassett won the heptathlon pole vault. Bassett turned in a mark of 14-7.25 (4.45m). Bo Ackerson-Gilroy (3.95m) tied for fourth in the event, while Donald Cooper (3.65m) finished seventh. Ackerson-Gilroy matched the school record in the heptathlon high jump (6-08.00) while he and Bassett placed third and fourth, respectively, in the heptathlon. Both recorded SoCon record marks, Ackerson-Gilroy with 4878 points and Bassett with 4770 points.
Cooper also ran a school record of 22.38 in the men's 200-meter dash preliminaries. He placed seventh in the finals with a time of 22.71.
Kyle Kirby placed third in the weight throw with a new school record of 57-00.25.
On the women's side on Friday, senior Morgan Tyler won her second-consecutive 60-meter hurdles event. Tyler finished in a personal best time of 8.69. She also placed fourth in the triple jump with a school record of 39-03.00.
Junior Hillary Neal won the mile for the second time in a row. Neal ran the event in a school record time of 4:49.52. Following Neal in the event, Jessica Van Ausdall came in third with a time of 5:04.64.
Mackenzie Wills tied for second in the pole vault with a personal best of 11-07.75 while Laura Bedsole earned All-Freshman honors with her fourth place finish of 11-01.75.
