BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Samford softball player Katie England was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games March 1-8. The selections are made by the league office and this is the first award for the Bulldogs this season.
The third baseman from Birmingham, Ala., England helped lead Samford to a 2-3 record at the Wilson/Demarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend. She safely reached base 13 times and slugged a team high of .684 while recording six RBI and one stolen base.
In the Bulldogs' 6-1 loss at No. 9 Arizona State, England hit her first home run of the season and accounted for Samford's only run in the game. She had two RBI in each of Samford's wins, which came against Northern Iowa and Idaho State. England also posted her second home run of the season against the Bengals on Sunday.
England and the rest of the Bulldogs will be back in action at home this weekend as they open up Southern Conference play against Appalachian State. The series includes a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday, both beginning at 1 p.m.
