CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Samford baseball team dropped a 14-4 decision at the College of Charleston in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Field.

With the loss, Samford drops to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference play. College of Charleston improves to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Bo Smith led Samford at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Wayne Miller was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bulldogs. Kyle Putkonen pitched 4.1 innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits to take the loss on the mound.

For Charleston at the plate, Justin Brewer drove in four runs in a 2-for-3 performance. Baker Knox was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Jose Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Cole Rakar went 3-for-6 at the plate for the Cougars. Christian Powell pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits to earn the win.

Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning. Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Stephen Ballard for a 1-0 Samford lead.

College of Charleston took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brewer singled down the left-field line to drive in Rodriguez and Knox for a 2-1 Cougar lead.

Samford answered with two runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead back at 3-2. Brad Moss scored the game-tying run on a Charleston error. Miller later scored when Smith reached base on an infield single to give Samford a one-run lead.

College of Charleston plated six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-3 lead. Knox and Blake drove in two runs each, while Kolby Epley and Brewer drove in a run each for a five-run Cougar lead.

Samford plated a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-4. Smith hit a solo home run to right field for Samford's fourth run of the game.

The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 9-4. Brewer doubled to right-center field to drive in Rodriguez for Charleston's lone run of the inning.

Charleston added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 11-4. Rodriguez and Thomas Brittle drove in a run each for the Cougars in the sixth.

Charleston plated three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 14-4. Rodriguez tripled to drive in Knox for the first run of the inning. Brittle later homered with Rodriguez on base for a 10-run Charleston lead.
