GREENVILLE, S.C. ---- The Samford softball team dropped its third straight contest as it fell in the series opener at Furman, 2-1, Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs fall to 8-12 overall and 1-3 in Southern Conference play while Furman moves to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the league.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a home run by Aaren Fisher. The homer was her first of the year and the 13th of her career. However, Furman's pitcher Lana Mackey would give up just two more hits and the Furman defense was able to keep Samford from scoring again.
Until the fourth inning, Samford's pitcher Amanda Barrs and the Bulldogs had held the Paladins to only three hits in the game. However, Furman matched that number in the inning, putting up two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The Paladins scored before Samford could even record the first out of the inning. With runners on first and second, Megan Schonhar singled to left center to drive in Brythe Blankenship from second to tie the score. Kayla Burris would come in to pitch for the Bulldogs and then the batter Taylor Bean grounded into a double play while Alyssa Williams moved to third base. Stephanie Field then singled to bring home Williams and the Paladins took the 2-1 lead.
Burris gave up just two hits in the rest of the game as she finished out the last three innings. Barrs falls to 1-6 on the year after giving up two runs on five hits in three innings of play. She struck out three batters and walked two. Along with Fisher, Katie England and Amanda Jordan each recorded hits for the Bulldogs.
Mackey (2-4) threw a complete game and struck out seven batters while giving up just one earned run on three hits. Field was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Paladins while Mackey, Blankenship, Williams and Schonhar each recorded a hit for Furman.
