Softball Drops Two In Second Day Of Arizona State Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. ---- The Samford softball team held No. 9 Arizona State to only six runs and eight hits in its first game of day two of the Wilson/Demarini Invitational Saturday. However, the Bulldogs but could not score more than one run and therefore fell to the Sun Devils, 6-1, before falling to UC Santa Barbara in the nightcap, 5-2.

The Sun Devils scored four in the second inning before Samford (6-8) got on the board in the top of the fourth on a home run by Katie England. Arizona State then added two more runs in the bottom of the inning led off by a one-out homer to bring the final score to 6-1.

Amanda Barrs (1-3) took the loss after pitching four and one-third innings. She gave up two earned runs on eight hits and walked three batters. Robyn Harmon closed out the game and only recorded one walk.

England's home run was her only hit of the game but she was credited with the Bulldogs' only run and RBI. Alex Adams went 2-for-3 at the plate while Amy Gonzalez went 1-for-3.

Katelyn Boyd led the Sun Devils a 2-for-3 appearance at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Sam Parlich (3-1) pitched the complete game, giving up just one earned run on four hits. She struck out two batters and walked two. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

UCSB took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning before adding another run to their score in the top of the third. Samfor finally got into the game in the bottom of the inning scoring when Harmon scored from first base on a double by England that lead to an error.

Each team scored one more in the fourth inning, the Gauchos on a wild pitch and the Bulldogs on a sacrifice fly to left field by Anna Kimbrell to score Rachael Reeves. UCSB would score one more in the top of the fifth inning to make the final score, 5-2.

Stephanie Royall (4-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up just two earned runs on five hits. She struck out one batter and walked four in three and two-thirds innings of play. Harmon closed out the final three and one-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one, and giving up two hits. Harmon also was 1-for-2 at the plate with one run. England and Kimbrell each recorded an RBI and hit while Amanda Jordan had two hits and Aaren Fisher had one hit.

Lindsey Correa pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters, walking five and giving up two earned runs on six hits. Lainely DePompa led the Gauchos at the plate with a 2-for-4 appearance along with two runs. Four other Gauchos had one hit while three others had one run.
