The Samford University women's tennis team picked up its biggest win of the 2010 campaign Sunday as the Bulldogs handed the Air Force Falcons their third loss of the season in a thrilling 4-3 non-conference match held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the victory, Samford (7-4) improved its record at home to 6-2 and snapped the Falcons' five-match winning streak. Air Force (12-3) entered Sunday's contest having won its previous five contests by a combined score of 34-1. On Saturday, the Falcons swept the Bulldogs' Southern Conference-foe Wofford 7-0.
Prior to Sunday's defeat, Air Force's previous two losses this season came against Colorado and Nebraska.
Samford won all three doubles matches Sunday to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest. The Bulldogs then received a trio of critical victories in singles play to claim the hard-fought 4-3 triumph.
During the singles competition, Samford's Taylor Morgan cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win against Air Force's Christen Monreal on court No. 1. Morgan, who is the 14th-ranked player in the ITA's Southern Region, improved her singles record to 7-3 this season.
The Bulldogs' second and third victories in singles play occurred on courts No. 3 and No. 4. Samford's Madelie Janse Van Rensburg tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win on court No. 3, while Parkison earned the match-clinching triumph in the No. 4 singles contest 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. With Parkison's deciding victory, she improved her singles record to 7-3 this season.
The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs resume play in their SoCon schedule against the Davidson Wildcats at the Samford Tennis Center.
