Samford's Wayne Miller and Trey Hayes both had career highs in hits to lead the Bulldogs' baseball team to a 16-6 Southern Conference win in the first game of a three-game league series at Davidson Thursday evening at Wilson Field.
Miller led Samford, going 6-for-7 with two doubles and three RBI. Hayes went 5-for-6 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Mason Meredeth was 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBI. David Schulze went 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. Michael Johnson went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Bo Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate.
As a team, Samford pounded out 20 hits, marking the third time this season the Bulldogs have had at least 20 hits in a game.
Jonathan Stephens started the game on the mound for Samford and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits to earn the win and improve to 5-0 on the season. Michael Gunter pitched the final 3.0 innings, giving up one run on one hit to earn his first save of the season.
For Davidson, Calvin Sigelbaum went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Drew Gadaire went 2-for-5 at the plate for the Wildcats. Danny Weiss also homered and drove in two runs in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate for Davidson. Ian Horkley pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits to take the loss and drop his record to 2-2.
Samford jumped on top first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Miller doubled to lead off the inning. After moving to third base on a Davidson error, Miller scored when Meredeth hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the first run of the game. Schulze then reached base on another Davidson error. Hayes later singled to left field to drive in Schulze for a 2-0 Samford lead.
Samford added two runs in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. Miller singled to drive in Johnson for Samford's third run of the game. The final run of the inning was scored when Schulze singled to drive in Miller.
Samford put six runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to push its lead to 10-0. The majority of the damage in the inning was done by a pair of two-run home runs by Schulze and Hayes. Johnson and Miller also drove in a run each in the inning for the Bulldogs.
Davidson got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sigelbaum hit a solo home run to center field to cut the Samford lead to 10-1.
Samford put four more runs up in the top of the sixth inning. Meredeth hit a grand slam with Austin Allison, Miller and Brad Moss on base for a 14-1 Samford lead.
Davidson added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Samford lead to 14-4. Andrew Barna, Tommy Piacenza and Sigelbaum drove in a run each in the inning for Davidson.
Samford added another run in the top of the seventh inning. Miller doubled to drive in Hayes to give Samford a 15-4 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Davidson's Weiss hit a two-run homer to make the score 15-6.
Samford plated one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 16-6. Hayes doubled and then moved to third base on a single by pinch-hitter Gary Cramer. Hayes scored when Johnson grounded out to first base for the game's final run.
With the win, Samford improves to 15-10 overall and 6-1 in Southern Conference play. Davidson drops to 13-13 overall and 4-7 in league play.
