In its final home match of the 2010 campaign, the Samford University men's tennis team fell short in a 6-1 decision against the 28th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Wednesday in a non-conference contest held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the loss, Samford (11-11) closed out its home schedule with a 7-6 record. The Bulldogs also dropped to 8-5 in non-conference matches this season.
No. 28-ranked Alabama (13-11) picked up a pair of victories Wednesday. Prior to its win against Samford, the Crimson Tide tallied a 5-2 triumph over UAB at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
Against its highest ranked opponent of the season, Samford won the doubles point by tallying victories on courts No. 2 and No. 3.
The Bulldogs' tandem of Zac Dunkle and Oliver Reynolds knocked off the Crimson Tide's Jarryd Botha and Trey Walston in the No. 2 doubles contest, 8-3. Samford's combination of Carl Abalos and Scott Foster then clinched the opening point of the match as they held on for an 8-6 win against Alabama's Creighton Blanchard and Harris Barnard on court No. 3.
After trailing early in Wednesday's match, the nationally ranked Crimson Tide bounced back in singles play and tallied victories on all six courts to record its 6-1 win.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at 10 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs close out the 2010 campaign with a Southern Conference road contest against the Georgia Southern Eagles in Statesboro, Ga.
