The Samford University men's tennis team closed out its 2010 campaign with a hard-fought 4-3 loss Sunday against the Georgia Southern Eagles in a Southern Conference matchup held at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
With the loss, Samford (11-12, 3-7 SoCon) closed out its 2010 season with a 4-5 record in road matches. The Bulldogs played in a number of close matches this year and dropped their fourth 4-3 decision of the season Sunday. Samford compiled a 6-4 record in one-point decisions in 2010.
Georgia Southern (8-13, 3-6 SoCon) closed out its season with a two-match winning streak and moved to 1-0-1 against Samford. Last year, the teams registered a rare 3-3 draw in a heated SoCon match held in Birmingham, Ala.
On Sunday, the Eagles won the doubles point and then received singles victories on the bottom three courts to hang on for their 4-3 win.
Samford earned its three singles victories on courts No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. In the No. 1 singles contest, the Bulldogs' Carson Kadi topped Georgia Southern's J. Melian Puigventos, 7-5, 6-3. With the win, Kadi closed out his sophomore season with a 13-9 dual-match record, including a stellar 7-3 record in conference play.
On court No. 2, Samford's Zac Dunkle outlasted Jayraj Jadejah, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, while Oliver Reynolds knocked off the Eagles' Matthijs Verdam, 6-4, 7-6 (6), in the No. 3 singles contest. Reynolds, the Bulldogs' junior from McDonough, Ga., improved his final record on the season to 12-7, including an impressive 10-4 mark at the No. 3 position.
With one of the youngest teams in the talent-laden SoCon this season, all six of Samford's starting players will return for the 2011 campaign.
