CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
The Samford University women's tennis team extended its season-best winning streak to nine-consecutive matches Sunday as the Bulldogs defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts 6-1 in their final contest of the 2010 campaign.
With the win, Samford (17-5, 9-1 Southern Conference) concluded its regular season with an impressive 5-3 record on the road. The Bulldogs also finished the year as the second-place team in the conference and earned a first-round matchup against the third-seeded Furman Paladins in the SoCon Tournament at 2 p.m. (CDT) on April 24 in Charleston, S.C.
Earlier this season, Samford snapped Furman's 12-year, 100-match SoCon winning streak with a 6-1 victory on March 27 in Birmingham, Ala.
In Sunday's 6-1 win against Western Carolina, the Bulldogs swept all three doubles matches and then breezed their way to five quick straight-set victories in singles play. Samford has not been defeated in dual-match play since March 16 when the Bulldogs lost to 70th-ranked North Florida.
Sophomore Lindsey Mallory extended her winning streak in singles play to nine straight matches. The Bulldogs' native of Louisville, Ky., cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against the Catamounts' Emily Turke in the No. 6 singles contest. With her triumph, Mallory improved to 9-0 in singles play and improved her record on the season to 15-5.
Rebecca Kirven and Stephanie Parkison both earned their fifth-consecutive singles wins Sunday. Kirven improved her team-leading record in dual-match play to 17-4, while Parkison moved to 14-7 this season.
The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action April 24 at 2 p.m. (CDT) in Charleston, S.C., as the Bulldogs begin their quest for the 2010 SoCon Tournament championship against the Furman Paladins in the opening round of play at the four-team competition.
