The Samford baseball team plated seven runs in the last four innings to earn an 11-7 come-from-behind Southern Conference win at Davidson Friday evening at Wilson Field.
With the win, Samford secures the series win along with Thursday evening's 16-6 win. Samford improves to 16-10 overall and 7-1 in Southern Conference play. Davidson drops to 13-14 overall and 4-8 in league play.
Samford was led at the plate by Michael Johnson, going 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Mason Meredeth went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI. Wayne Miller was 3-for-6 at the plate for the Bulldogs, while Austin Allison hit a solo home run in his lone at-bat of the game. David Schulze and Gary Cramer had two hits each for the Bulldogs.
Dayne Cutrell pitched 4.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits to earn the win and improve to 1-2 on the season. Andrew Jones pitched 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit and Lex Rutledge pitched the final inning without giving up a hit to finish the game for the Bulldogs.
For Davidson at the plate, Andrew Barna went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Calvin Sigelbaum and Michael Zeblo had two hits each as well for the Wildcats. Mike Frongello pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss and drop his record to 2-2.
Samford jumped on top first with four runs in the top of the first inning. Schulze doubled to drive in Miller for the first run of the game. Bo Smith then singled to drive in Schulze and Meredeth. Johnson later singled to drive in Trey Hayes for a 4-0 Samford lead.
Davidson came back with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 7-4 lead. In the first inning, Barna, Tommy Piacenza and Sigelbaum drove in a run each for the Wildcats.
In the second inning, Barna gave Davidson the lead with a two-run single. In the third inning, Coleman Barron and Zeblo drove in a run each for a three-run Davidson lead.
Samford plated a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Davidson lead to 7-5. Stephen Ballard doubled to left field to drive in Miller to pull the Bulldogs to within two runs.
The Bulldogs plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-7 lead. Johnson hit a three-run home run with Smith and Cramer on base to give Samford the lead.
Samford added two runs in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth to make the final score 11-7. In the eighth inning, Meredeth hit a solo home run for the first run of the inning. Smith later scored from third base when Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to left field for a three-run Samford lead. The final run of the game was scored in the top of the ninth inning when Allison hit a solo home run to right field.
