Men Second, Women Fifth After First Day At SoCon Championships

BOONE, N.C. ---- The Samford University track and field team set two new school records and captured four individual titles on the first day of the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Boone, N.C. The men are currently in second place in the overall standings while the women sit in fifth place.

Five Bulldogs earned All-Freshman honors while five upperclassmen received All-SoCon honors.

Appalachian State leads the women's ranking with 43 points followed by Elon with 36.5 points in second place. Western Carolina (24.5) and Georgia Southern (22) are in front of Samford (20) while the College of Charleston (17), Citadel (13), Davidson (9), Chattanooga (6) and Furman (4) round out the women's field in that order.

The Mountaineers also lead the men's field with 70.5 points followed by Samford with 56.5 points after day one. Western Carolina is just behind in third with 52 points. Citadel (16.5), Furman (15), Davidson (11), Chattanooga (9), UNC Greensboro (3) and Wofford (0.5) round out the men's field in that order.

Hillary Neal won the steeplechase again this year with a time of 10:42.61 to earn All-SoCon honors while Chenelle Terry received All-Freshman honors for her win in the women's high jump. She tied her personal best of 5-07.00 in the event. Cameron Bean won the men's steeplechase and earned All-SoCon honors with a time of 9:10.00 followed by Blaise Carie in second place with a personal best of 9:17.83.

Patrick Wells defended his SoCon pole vault title with a school record of 16-10.75. He, along with Michael Seaman, earned All-SoCon honors, as Seaman placed second in the event with a school record of 16-08.75. The previous school record was 16-07.00, which was set by Wells at last season's SoCon Championships.

Zac Epperson placed fifth in the pole vault while Brandon Bassett and Ryan Cook placed seventh and eighth, respectively. They all posted a mark of 15-01.00 and the mark was a personal best for Bassett. Bassett and Cook also earned All-Freshman honors for the event.

Kyle Kirby broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 182-11. The mark earned him a third place finish and All-SoCon honors. Chris Davis also finished 12th in the event with a personal best of 142-07.

Morgan Tyler placed ninth in the long jump with a personal best of 18-02.25 while Jessica Lucas took tenth place in the hammer throw with a personal best of 122-05.

Bo Ackerson-Gilroy tied for third in the men's high jump with a leap of 6-02.75 while Donald Cooper placed eighth in the event with a jump of 6-00.75.

Bassett also finished seventh in the long jump, receiving All-Freshman honors for his leap of 21-03.25. Chinadu Amah placed 17th with a personal best of 19-06.25.

In the women's 10,000 meters, Jillian Klassen finished 12th with a personal best of 40:28.62. Lauren Pilcher placed 15th with a time of 42.17.18.

Holly Benson qualified for the 800-meter finals with a fourth place finishing time of 2:16.75. Morgan Tyler and Julie McDonald qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Tyler finished fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 14.38 while McDonald placed eighth with a personal best of 14.95.

Tyler also qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a sixth place time of 1:05.48. Leslie Graf just missed the qualifying cut off with a personal best of 1:06.78, and Ashley Bridenbaugh ran a time of 1:09.11.

Tatum Moffett ran a personal best of 58.72 in the 400-meter dash preliminaries. She finished just outside of the qualifying times in 11th place followed by Ashley Dance who finished 12th with a time of 58.91.

Zac Cordner qualified for the finals in the men's 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 50.32 that landed him in eighth place. Donald Cooper just missed qualifying with a 10th place time of 50.41. Will Denton finished 10th in the 800-meter preliminaries with a time of 1:55.32 while Ramsey White tied for 12th place with a personal best time of 1:55.76. Neither qualified for Sunday's finals.

Cavan Corcoran qualified for the 110-meter hurdle finals with a time of 15.66 to finish in sixth place. Brandon Bassett finished 10th, just outside of the qualifying marks, with a time of 16.16. Chas Keithan finished second and qualified for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 55.93 while Donald Cooper placed 11th and did not qualify with a time of 58.79. Cavan Corcoran also did not qualify but finished 13th with a time of 59.58.

In the women's heptathlon, Christian McGuire leads the Samford field in sixth place followed by Emily Allen in eighth place and Elyse Rippe in tenth place after four events.

McGuire set a personal best in all but one event in the heptathlon. She took sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 26.53. She also placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 16.09 while winning the shot put with a personal best of 34-05.75. She tied for eighth place in the high jump with a mark of 4-07.50.

Allen also posted personal bests in all but one event. She placed seventh in the 200-meter dash with a personal best of 26.68 while taking eighth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 16.15. In the high jump, she tied for fifth place with a personal best of 4-08.75 while taking sixth place in the shot put with a toss of 28:09.25.

Rippe finished last in each event but set personal bests in two of the four. She posted a personal best time of 30-36 in the 200-meter dash while marking a personal best of 19.36 in the 100-meter hurdles as well. She tied with McGuire in the high jump with the mark of 4-07.50 and posted a toss of 26-09.00 in the shot put.

In the men's decathlon, Keithan and Ackerson-Gilroy are in third and fourth places, respectively, after five events. Chas Keithan posted personal best marks in four out of the five events. He started out with a fourth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a personal best of 11.88 followed by a fifth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-07.50. He then placed fifth in the shot put with a personal best of 33-06.50 followed by second place finishes in the 400-meter dash and the high jump with personal bests in each.

Ackerson-Gilroy won the high jump with a leap of 6-04.25 while taking second in the long jump with a mark of 21-00.50. He also took third place in the shot put with a toss of 36-02.00 and fifth and sixth in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.

Sunday's events begin at 8 a.m. ET with the completion of the men's decathlon including the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. The women wrap up the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
