Baseball To Host SoCon-Leading The Citadel This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will play host to Southern Conference leading The Citadel this weekend in a three-game league series at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

The teams will kick the series off with a game Friday night at 6 p.m. There will also be games Saturday at 1 p.m., and Sunday, also at 1 p.m.

Samford enters the weekend with a record of 23-17 overall and 11-6 in Southern Conference play after dropping its lone midweek game at Auburn, 11-4 on Tuesday. Samford currently sits in third place in the SoCon standings, four and a half games behind The Citadel and just one game behind second-place College of Charleston.

Samford is led at the plate by David Schulze, batting .377 with a team-high 11 home runs and 48 RBI. Wayne Miller is batting .361 with six home runs and 27 RBI, while Mason Meredeth is batting .360 with eight home runs and 39 RBI.

Samford is scheduled to pitch Jonathan Stephens (5-1, 5.10 ERA) on Friday. Kyle Putkonen (3-3, 7.71 ERA) will pitch on Saturday, while Josh Martin (3-5, 5.82 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale on the mound.

The Citadel is currently 28-15 overall and 16-2 in SoCon play after winning two of three games from Davidson last weekend. The Citadel defeated Davidson in games two and three by scores of 7-0 and 5-3 after falling in game one, 5-2, to maintain its spot at the top of the league standings.

Matt Simonelli leads The Citadel at the plate, batting .352 with four home runs and a team-high 45 RBI. Bryan Altman and Brad Felder share the team lead in home runs with nine each.

The Citadel is scheduled to start Asher Wojciechowski (8-1, 2.47 ERA) on the mound Friday. In Saturday's game, Matt Talley (4-2, 4.50 ERA) will get the starting nod, while Michael Clevinger (3-2, 5.88 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale.

Samford and The Citadel have met three previous times, with all three meetings coming in last season's Southern Conference series in Charleston, S.C. The Citadel won two of the three games. Samford took game one, 5-4, but The Citadel won games two and three by scores of 5-1 and 9-5.
