BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford University men's tennis team picked up a key Southern Conference win Saturday as the Bulldogs earned a 6-1 victory against The Citadel Bulldogs at the Samford Tennis Center.
Samford (10-8, 2-4 SoCon) registered its second consecutive conference win and improved to 7-3 when playing at home this season. With the loss, The Citadel (5-12, 2-6 SoCon) suffered its third straight SoCon defeat and dropped to 0-5 in road matches this season.
Samford swept the doubles matches Saturday and received singles victories from Zac Dunkle, Oliver Reynolds, Carl Abalos, Michael Browder and Adam Witcher. The Citadel's lone win occurred in the No. 1 singles contest.
Dunkle, Samford's highly touted true freshman from Atlanta, Ga., extended his winning streak to four consecutive matches Saturday. In the No. 2 singles contest, Dunkle dispatched of The Citadel's Alberto Diaz 6-2, 6-4, to improve his record on the season to 10-6.
Samford's Abalos also kept his winning streak alive in singles play Saturday. By defeating Derek Dickey on court No. 4, 6-3, 6-1, the Bulldogs' junior from Woodstock, Ga., tallied his third straight win and improved his record on the season to 11-6.
The Samford men's tennis team will next be in action Wednesday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs continue their five-match homestand against the Chattanooga Mocs at the Samford Tennis Center.
