BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University athletic department honored 35 student-athletes Tuesday morning in a breakfast as a part of National Student-Athlete Day.
National Student-Athlete Day is sponsored by the NCAA, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports, the Northeastern University's Sport in Society and the National Federation of State High School Associations. It began in 1987 to recognize college and high school student-athletes who have excelled in balancing athletics and campus and community involvement.
"These kids exemplify the best of the best from a service standpoint," said Chris Scott, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services. "We always recognize our student-athletes for academics and athletics but we rarely highlight their campus and community involvement. This is just a day to give them the recognition that they deserve."
Samford student-athletes were selected based on nominations by coaches and a review of their overall college resume. Individual recognition is based on student-athletes earning a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and being actively involved in campus and/or community activities.
Among the numerous campus and community activities and organizations that Samford honorees are involved in are: Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; Fraternity and Sorority memberships; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; NCAA Recertification Committee; youth ministries athletics teams; employed by the Samford Crimson student newspaper; church group leaders; team clinic volunteers; Samford Ambassadors; international mission trip workers.
