The Samford and Wofford baseball teams combined for 23 runs on 31 hits in the opening game of a three-game Southern Conference series as Wofford defeated Samford, 14-9, Friday night at Russell C. King Field.
Samford drops to 25-19 overall and 13-8 in SoCon play with the loss. Wofford improves to 15-30 overall and 8-14 in league play.
Samford was led at the plate by Mason Meredeth, going 3-for-6 with a home run and an RBI. David Schulze went 3-for-4, extending his current hit streak to 20 games. Trey Hayes went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Gary Cramer went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Andrew Jones pitched 2.1 innings in relief, giving up three runs on four hits to take the loss and drop his season record to 4-2. In all, Samford used six different pitchers. Jonathan Stephens, Michael Gunter, Mark Lewallyn, Lex Rutledge and Joshua VanFleteren also saw time on the mound for Samford.
Kyle Behrendt led Wofford at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two RBI. Landon Bennett went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Mac Doyle went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI. Clark Wise and Matt Moore had two hits each for the Terriers.
Wofford used seven pitchers in the game. Bobby Streisel pitched 1.0 inning in relief, giving up one run on two hits to earn the win and improve to 1-2 on the season. John Cornely tossed the final 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit to earn his first save of the season.
Wofford jumped on top first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bennett singled with the bases loaded to drive in Alex Lee for the first run of the game. David Roney followed with a single to drive in Behrendt for a 2-0 Terrier lead.
Samford answered with two runs in the top of the second inning to tie the score. After Schulze walked to lead off the inning, Bo Smith tripled to right field to drive in Schulze for Samford's first run of the contest. Hayes then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Smith to make the score 2-2.
Wofford took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Doyle hit a solo home run to left-center field to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead.
Samford took the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Meredeth scored the first run of the inning when Smith reached base on a Wofford error. Hayes then doubled to drive in Schulze to give Samford a 4-3 lead. Cramer then singled to drive in Smith for a two-run Samford lead. Michael Johnson then doubled to drive in Hayes and Cramer to make the score 7-3.
Wofford came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Samford lead to 7-6. Wise came in from third base on a wild pitch for the first run of the inning. Behrendt singled to drive in Moore to make the score 7-5. Bennett walked with the bases loaded to drive in Lee to cut the Samford lead to 7-6.
Wofford took the lead again with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Doyle scored on a wild pitch and Wise reached base on a bunt single to drive in Bennett for an 8-7 lead.
Samford tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Hayes singled to right field to drive in Meredeth to make the score 8-8.
Wofford plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 10-8 lead. Bennett doubled down the left-field line to drive in Doyle and Behrendt for a two-run Wofford lead.
Samford cut the lead to 10-9 with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Meredeth hit a solo home run to right-center field to bring Samford to within one run.
Wofford put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. James Foster and Behrendt drove in a run each and Doyle drove in two runs to make the final score 14-9.
