Baseball Drops SoCon Game At Wofford Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford baseball team plated eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a close game on its way to a 17-7 Southern Conference win over Samford Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.

Samford drops to 25-20 overall and 13-9 in Southern Conference play with the loss. Wofford improves to 16-30 overall and 9-14 in league play. With Saturday's win, Wofford secures the series win over the Bulldogs, with the series finale scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Offensively, Samford hit five home runs in the game. Wayne Miller, Mason Meredeth, David Schulze, Bo Smith and Tripp Swann each homered in the game for the Bulldogs. Meredeth was 2-for-4 overall with three RBI. Schulze extended his current hit streak to 21 games.

Kyle Putkonen pitched 5.0 innings, giving up nine runs, seven earned, on 14 hits to take the loss and drop his season record to 3-5. Mark Lewallyn, Michael Gunter and Tyler Vanderheiden also saw action on the mound for Samford.

Wofford was led at the plate by Kyle Behrendt, going 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBI. James Foster went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Mac Doyle, Landon Bennett, Konstantine Diamaduros, Clark Wise and Matt Moore had two hits each. Bobby Streisel tossed 3.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits to earn the win and improve his season record to 2-2.

Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning. After Miller walked and Stephen Ballard was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Meredeth singled up the middle to drive in Miller for a 1-0 Samford lead.

Wofford answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first. Doyle singled to drive in Foster, who had walked to lead off the inning, to tie the score at 1-1.

The Terriers took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Foster singled to right field to drive in Wise to give Wofford a 2-1 lead.

Samford plated four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Miller led the inning off with a home run to tie the score. After Ballard doubled, Meredeth hit a two-run homer to give Samford a two-run lead. Schulze then homered for Samford's final run of the inning.

Wofford came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Samford lead to 5-4. Wise scored the first run of the inning on a Samford error. Foster then doubled to drive in Moore to bring Wofford to within one run.

The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-4. Smith homered to right field for a two-run Samford lead.

The Terriers plated another run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-5. Diamaduros singled to drive in Bennett for Wofford's fifth run of the game.

Wofford scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead. Kyle Behrendt doubled to drive in two runs and Bennett singled to drive in one run. Doyle scored the inning's final run when David Roney grounded into a double play for a three-run Terrier lead.

Wofford broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 17-6. Diamaduros drove in three runs, and Moore and Behrendt drove in two runs each in the inning as the Terriers sent 13 men to the plate in the inning.

Samford plated one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 17-7. Swann hit a solo home run to right field for the game's final run.
