PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -
Samford women's golfer Sarah Butts continued her strong showing in the 30th Annual Georgia-Florida Women's Team Matches on Thursday as the Bulldogs' junior to be defeated former USGA Senior Women's Amateur champion Diane Lang, 2.5-0.5, at the PGA National Resort and Spa.
Despite Butts' second victorious outing in as many days, her Georgia squad saw its opening-round lead dissipate en route to a 29.5-24.5 setback to Team Florida following final-round action. Butts, a native of Carrollton, Ga., teamed with Margaret Shirley on Wednesday to sweep all three points from Florida's Gennifer Mendez and Tovie St. Louis.
Team Georgia entered Thursday's competition with a 13.5-4.5 lead, but was outscored 25-11 on the final day of the two-day affair.
Butts, who will begin her junior season at Samford in the fall, is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign in which she competed in nine tournaments for the Bulldogs. She ended last season on a high note as she earned a season-best sixth-place finish at the 2010 Southern Conference Championship. Butts finished the three-round event with a score of 227.
