The Samford University men's golf team carded a third-round score of 8-under-par 280 on Sunday to rally for a second-place finish at the talent-laden Sea Trail Men's Intercollegiate hosted by Elon University at the Sea Trail Golf Club. The Bulldogs finished the 54-hole tournament with four players in the top 20.
Samford's Gabe Hyde carded a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a score of 213 (68-76-69) and tied for sixth place in the individual standings. Drew Aimone finished tied for 12th (72-73-69 - 214) while Casey O'Toole (69-77-71) and Bill Nabors (72-74-71) placed in a tie for 19th with a score of 217.
High Point's Chase Wilson shot a 2-under 70 during the final round of the Sea Trail Men's Intercollegiate to finish with a 10-under-par 206 and take the top honors. Tanner Norton of Elon finished in second place with a three-day score of 210 (64-69-77). Stetson's Jacobo Pastor (68-71-72) took third place after a scorecard playoff with Stetson's Sam Ryder (70-67-74) and Elon's Jack Adkins (71-70-70). The trio finished the tournament with a score of 211.
Elon took the team title with a six-stroke advantage and a score of 850 (275-284-291). Samford finished the tournament in second place after shooting a low round of 280 on Sunday (281-295-280 - 856). George Mason finished three stroke behind Samford with a score of 859 (286-287-286) while High Point placed fourth (288-283-290 ¬- 861) and Guilford finished fifth (291-288-285 - 864).
Steve Dressel of Elon helped the Phoenix's cause, finishing tied for sixth with a final score of 213 (67-72-74) while Leif Neijstrom finished with a score of 220 (73-73-74) to sit tied for 28th.
Josh Apple (71-72-71) and Branson Real (70-72-72) led the way for George Mason finishing tied for 12th place with a score of 214. Joe Buttgereit shot a two-under 70 in the final round to finish tied for 16th with a score of 216 (75-71-70) while Casey Thompson finished tied at 19th (72-72-73 - 217).
Bethune-Cookman's Willie Mack, Charleston Southern's Jonathan Rustin, Wofford's Chandler Brazeal and Mat Hennick of Guilford finished tied with Dressel and Hyde at sixth place with a score of 213.
Samford's Martin Bunt rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with an 54-hole total of 227 (81-72-74).
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Oct. 11-12 as the Bulldogs compete in the prestigious 2010 Jerry Pate Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama at the Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.
