Appalachian State's Ashlen Dewart scored 21 points, all in the second half, as the Mountaineer women's basketball team overcame a 19-point second half deficit to defeat Samford, 74-62, in a Southern Conference game Friday night in ASU's Holmes Center.
Samford held a 17-point lead (39-22) at halftime, and a 19-point lead (41-22) early in the second half. Appalachian State, however, outscored Samford, 52-23 in the second half to earn the win.
"I thought our defensive intensity went down in the second half," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "We were a little hesitant against their one-three-one. But you have to give a lot of credit to App. State, they hung in there and kept fighting."
Samford was led in scoring by Savannah Hill with 16 points. Hannah Dawson scored 12 points for the Bulldogs. Emily London, Paige Anderson and Ruth Ketcham scored eight points each in the loss. Shelby Campbell had six points, five rebounds and four assists for Samford.
For ASU, Dewart made 7-of-10 shots from the floor (7-of-9 in the second half) and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Anna Freeman scored 18 points, while Sam Ramirez added 16 points for the Mountaineers.
Samford raced out to an early 12-2 lead with 15:37 to go in the first half after a layup by London. The Bulldogs pushed the lead out to 14 at 19-5 with 13:40 to go in the half following another basket by London. Appalachian State fought back to cut the lead to nine at 21-12 with 8:35 to go in the first half after a pair of free throws by Chakeitha Weldon.
Samford then went on a 10-4 run to push its lead out to 15 at 31-16 with 4:08 to go in the half after a pair of free throws by Anderson. After ASU cut the lead to 33-20, two late three-pointers by Campbell gave Samford a 39-22 lead heading into halftime.
An early layup by Hill pushed Samford's lead to 19 at 41-22 with 19:25 to go in the game. Appalachian State, however, answered with a 22-5 run to cut the Samford lead to two points at 46-44 with 12:59 to go in the game after a three-point play by Dewart.
Samford scored the next seven-straight points to push its lead back to nine points at 53-44 with 11:02 to go after a layup by Hill. ASU then went on a 23-4 run to take a 67-57 lead with 2:51 left after a layup by Weldon. Samford could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as ASU came away with the 74-62 win.
Samford shot 48.8 percent for the game (66.7 percent in the first half and 31.8 percent in the second half). Appalachian State made 50.0 percent of its shots (36.0 percent in the first half and 64.0 percent in the second half). Samford committed 23 turnovers in the game, while ASU had 15 turnovers.
Samford will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 16, when the Bulldogs play at Davidson. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start.
