Baseball Opens Practice For 2011 Season

Jan. 28, 2011

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team went through its first practice in preparation for the 2011 season Friday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

The Bulldogs practiced for about two hours and then scrimmaged for five and a half innings. Samford head coach Casey Dunn was excited about the way his team performed in its first practice of the 2011 preseason.

"I thought it was a very encouraging first day," Dunn said. "We threw eight different pitchers today and I thought all eight guys threw the ball really well for the first day. Their velocities were good, they threw strikes and I was really encouraged by what they were able to do. I thought we swung the bats well, with two home runs in a five and a half-inning game."

Dunn said he saw some positives from both veteran players and new faces. He said Friday's workout was a positive start to a new season.

"Today was a good day where a lot of our veteran guys, especially pitchers, came out and really competed and threw well," Dunn said. "Several of our newcomers really swung the bat well. Both of our home runs were by first-year guys. I think this is an exciting start to the season with a lot of guys getting their first taste."

Also on Friday, Samford announced an exciting new season ticket package. The Samford Grand Slam is the perfect way for families and groups to take in an entire season of Samford baseball. For just $50, four people gain admission to all 31 home games at Joe Lee Griffin Field including the annual matchups with in-state rivals Auburn and Alabama.

"We are excited about offering this package to the community", Dunn said. "With our returning veterans and some exciting young newcomers, we are looking forward to battling for the Southern Conference title."

Tickets may be purchased at the Samford Ticket Office inside The Pete Hanna Center or by visiting www.samfordsports.com/tickets. Individual game tickets will go on sale at a later date.

On February 13 starting at 2 p.m., the Bulldog baseball team will host a Kids Day at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium. Parents and kids alike are encouraged to come to this free event to preview the upcoming season. The Bulldog players will assist kids in hitting, pitching and defensive drills as well as playing catch in the outfield.
