Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford senior guard Emily London scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as the Bulldog women's basketball team earned a 78-48 Southern Conference win over the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.

"I thought this was a great win for our team because, for the first time in a while, we put together about 40 minutes of good basketball," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I was very pleased with having four players in double figures, scoring wise, and just having a good, solid 40 minutes of basketball."

Behind London for Samford, Savannah Hill scored 13 points. Paige Anderson and Ruth Ketcham added 10 points each. Shelby Campbell scored nine points and Jazmine Martin added eight points for the Bulldogs. Ketcham led the team in rebounding with nine. All 13 players on the Samford roster played and 10 of them scored in the win.

"Every player is important because every player contributes to our team, whether they play 40 minutes or one minute," Morris said. "So, when you have an opportunity where everybody gets to play, I think that is always great for team morale. We've had some big leads over the last two or three games, but we have let them slip a little, so it was nice to extend the lead and get to play everybody today."

For Charleston, Janae Smith led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Megan Fischer scored eight points, while Tonia Gerty and Alyssa Frye added six points apiece for the Cougars.

Samford jumped out on top early, racing out to an 11-2 lead with 14:17 to go in the first half after a three-point play by Hill. Charleston fought back to cut the lead to five points at 14-9 with 10:17 to go in the first half. Samford, however, scored the next six points to take an 11-point lead at 20-9 with 7:24 to go in the half following a pair of free throws by London.

With Samford leading, 28-18, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take a 35-18 lead with 23 seconds to go in the first half after a pair of free throws by Ketcham. A late jumper by Charleston's Gerty cut the Samford lead to 35-20 heading into halftime.

Samford opened the second half with a 10-1 run to push its lead to 45-21 with 16:22 to go in the game after a layup by Hannah Dawson. Charleston fought back to cut the lead to 20 points at 49-29 with 14:17 to go in the game.

With Samford leading, 53-32, the Bulldogs went on an 11-3 run to increase its lead to 29 at 64-35 with 6:54 left in the game after a jumper by Campbell. Charleston could get no closer than 24 points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 30-point win, 78-48.

As a team, Samford made 50.0 percent of its shots, including 43.5 percent from three-point range. Charleston made 32.8 percent of its shots and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Cougars out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 37-34.

Samford will be back in action on Monday, Jan. 31, when the Bulldogs play host to Georgia Southern. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
