WBB Takes 79-62 SoCon Win Over Wofford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team opened the 2011 portion of its schedule with a 79-62 Southern Conference win over Wofford Tuesday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.

"I think the biggest thing was defensively, holding them to 24 points in the first half and only 3-for-15 from the arc in the game," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I thought that was the key from a defensive standpoint and then obviously we got good shots offensively. This was a good, solid win, this team played Chattanooga very well just a couple of days ago."

With the win, Samford's improves to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in SoCon play. Samford is now in its 14th season of women's basketball and the program's all-time record is now 210-210, reaching the .500 mark for the first time. Wofford drops to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Samford was led by Savannah Hill with 17 points and six rebounds. Emily London scored 13 points and she became Samford's all-time leader in career three-pointers made. London has now made 221 three-pointers in her Samford career. The previous record was 220, set by Monica Maxwell.

Samford freshman Shelby Campbell scored 12 points for the Bulldogs. Jazmine Martin scored nine points and Jazmine Powers added eight points in the win.

As a team, Samford shot 57.4 percent overall and 33.3 percent from three-point range. Wofford made 43.1 percent of its shots and just 20.0 percent of its three-pointers.

For Wofford, Daniella Motley scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. April Moorhouse scored 15 points, while Rachel Brittenham added 10 points for the Terriers.

Samford started the game strong, jumping out to a 19-4 lead with 10:57 to go in the first half after a layup by Campbell. Wofford answered with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to eight at 21-13 with 9:02 to go in the first half following a layup by Motley.

The Bulldogs then went on a 15-4 run to push its lead out to 19 points at 36-17 with 2:46 left in the opening half after a three-pointer by Paige Anderson. Wofford fought back to cut the lead to 12 at 36-24 with 1:29 to go after a jumper by Motley. A late jumper by London gave Samford a 38-24 lead heading into halftime.

The teams traded baskets early in the second half until, with Samford leading 45-30, the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run to push its lead to 25 points at 57-32 with 14:26 to go in the game after a layup by Hill.

Wofford fought back to cut the lead to 21 at 60-39 with 11:42 to go, but Samford went on to lead by as much as 28 at 79-51 with 2:53 to go after a layup by Campbell. Wofford scored the final 11 points of the game to make the final score 79-62.

Samford will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 6, when the Bulldogs play host to the Furman Paladins. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
