
Aimone First; Bulldogs Second After Day One At F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - Samford junior Drew Aimone completed the opening two rounds of play at the 2011 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate in first place Monday as the Bulldogs' native of Savannah, Ga., carded a 36-hole score of 9-under-par 135 (67-68) at the par-72, 7,132-yard The Links at Novadell.
Aimone helped guide Samford to a second-place position and leads the 93-player field by three strokes over both Anthony Bradley of Austin Peay and Jake Tucker of Troy. Bradley and Tucker finished the opening two rounds of competition with identical scores of 138.
As a team, Samford finished Monday's opening rounds of play with a 15-under-par 561 (284-277). With Tuesday's final round still looming, the Bulldogs only trail host Austin Peay by a single stroke. Austin Peay carded a total team score of 560 (279-281) following 36 holes of action.
Rounding out the top-five teams at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate are Jacksonville State (282-282=564), Troy (290-277=567) and Binghamton University (287-282=569).
Each school in the tournament has fielded a squad of five, with the lowest four scores counting towards the final team total. The F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate consists of 54 holes and will conclude with a final 18-hole round Tuesday. Tuesday's round is slated to begin with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
The field for this week's F&M Bank Intercollegiate includes Samford, Austin Peay, Belmont, Binghamton, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Lipscomb, Morehead State, SIU Edwardsville, South Dakota, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Troy, UT Martin, Western Illinois and Wright State.
Samford's Aimone posted a tournament-best score of 135 on Monday, but the Bulldogs' next three performers also turned in cards with under-par scores.
Casey O'Toole, Bill Nabors and Gabe Hyde all tallied identical 36-hole scores of 2-under-par 142, while sophomore William Catanzaro rounded out the lineup with a two-round mark of 149 (75-74). Samford's trio of juniors comprised of O'Toole (72-70), Nabors (74-68) and Hyde (71-71) are all tied for 16th place in the individual standings.
The Samford University men's golf team will conclude play in the 2011 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate at 8 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday as the Bulldogs begin their final round of action at the par-72, 7,132-yard The Links at Novadell.
