CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Samford University men's golf team carded an opening-round score of 290 on Monday following 18 holes of competition at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina University at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
The Bulldogs concluded the first round of play in third place and trailed only first-place Gardner-Webb (282) and second-place UAB (287) following Monday's 18 holes of competition. Samford enters Tuesday's final round only eight strokes behind Gardner-Webb and three strokes behind 19th-ranked UAB.
Paced by the individual leader Kristopher Gray, who carded a 4-under par 67 on Monday, Gardner-Webb leads the 17-team field by five strokes after shooting two-under 282 in the opening round at the 2011 Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Gray carded five birdies against one bogey during his opening round to lead the 93-golfer field.
Monday's opening round was delayed a combined two and a half hours from its original scheduled tee time as heavy frost prevented teams from hitting the links. The start of Tuesday's final 18 holes has been moved back to 9 a.m. (CDT) with a slight possibility of a frost delay, though temperatures overnight Monday are forecasted to be warmer. Threesomes will tee-off on both the front and back nine.

The Bulldogs' true freshman Zac Hughes followed with an even-par 72, while Casey O'Toole and Bill Nabors both posted identical scores of 74.
Rounding out Monday's round for Samford was junior Drew Aimone. Aimone, the Bulldogs' native of Savannah, Ga., carded a first-round score of 75.
The Samford University men's golf team will resume play in the 2011 Hummingbird Intercollegiate at 9 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday as the Bulldogs begin competing in the final round of action being held at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Cullowhee, N.C.
