Big First Inning Lifts Baseball Over Alabama A&M, 14-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team plated 11 runs in the first inning on its way to a 14-1, seven-inning win over Alabama A&M Tuesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Six Samford pitchers saw time on the mound. Lex Rutledge (1-0) earned the win, pitching an inning, allowing no hits and striking out three batters. Josh Martin, Nick Calloway, Sean Handlan, Grant Sides and Phillip Ervin all pitched for the Bulldogs in the win as well.

"I'm really happy with our pitching tonight," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "All of our guys threw strikes tonight and we only had one walk."

Tommy Corbin and Saxon Butler each went 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead Samford at the plate. Garner Richey hit a three-run home run in a 1-for-2 performance. Christiaan Durdaller also drove in three runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate.

For Alabama A&M, Justin Watts (0-1) pitched a third of inning, giving up eight runs, only five earned, on four hits to take the loss. James Brown had Alabama A&M's lone RBI, going 0-for-3 at the plate.

In the 11-run first inning, Samford sent 16 batters to the plate. Durdaller drove in three runs in the inning, while Corbin and Butler had two RBI each in the inning. Kevin Putkonen, Brad Moss and Michael Johnson drove in a run each in the first inning.

Alabama A&M put its lone run on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Brown reached base on a fielder's choice to drive in Juan Lopez, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Samford added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to finish the scoring at 14-1. Richey hit a home run to left field with Corbin and Brandon Miller on base to give Samford a 13-run lead.

With the win, Samford improves to 4-0 on the season. Alabama A&M drops to 0-4 with the loss.
