Softball Shut Out By Lipscomb To Open Magic City Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford softball team dropped its first game of the Magic City Classic to Lipscomb Friday night, 10-0, at the UAB Softball Complex in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Lady Bisons pitcher Whitney Kiihnl pitched a six-inning no-hitter to hand the Bulldogs their fifth loss in a row.

Lipscomb (4-6) jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first inning after an RBI single and two home runs, including one two-run bomb that fell just to the right of the left field foul pole.

Samford (2-9) held Lipscomb to just one hit for the next four innings until the Lady Bisons tacked on six more runs in the top of the sixth inning with the help of back-to-back solo home runs and a three-RBI single.

Kayla Burris (1-4) started the game and took the loss for Samford. She pitched just one-third of an inning, giving up four earned runs on four hits. Nicole Bobrowski pitched the final 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits. She recorded four strikeouts and allowed just one walk.

All but two Lipscomb players had a hit against Samford. Mollie Mitchell, Vanessa Medina and Mackenzie Tucker led with two hits each. Medina also had two of the Lady Bisons' four home runs while Haley Elliott and Caroline Mason also hit a home run each. Mitchell led her team with four RBI while Elliott and Medina each had two.

Kiihnl (4-4) pitched the complete no-hitter shutout and recorded 17 strikeouts.

Samford opens play at home Saturday with day two of the Magic City Classic. The Bulldogs will play Indiana State at 12:30 p.m. and Alabama State at 5:30 p.m.

Alabama State and Eastern Illinois will play in the first game of the day at Bulldog Softball Field at 10 a.m. Radford and Lipscomb will face off in the 3 p.m. game while Radford and St. Louis close out the day in the 8 p.m. game.

Daily admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-17. Tournament passes are available for $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 6-17. Admission is free for children age five and under.
