Men's Golf Concludes Play At 2011 Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Samford University men's golf team closed out competition in the 2011 Furman Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 909 (308-294-307) Sunday as the Bulldogs finished tied for 19th place in the highly-touted tournament held at the Furman University Golf Course.

After a team-best round of 294 Saturday, Samford turned in a third-round mark of 307 Sunday to fall back to 19th place. Clemson dominated the competition in the three-day Furman Intercollegiate and posted a total team score of 16-under-par 848 (287-289-272). Clemson finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Kennesaw State and 14 strokes in front of third-place Virginia Tech.

Samford was paced in the 54-hole event by sophomore Casey O'Toole. The Bulldogs' native of Oneonta, Ala., finished the tournament with a team-best tally of 225 (76-68-81). Senior Martin Bunt proved to be one of the most consistent players for Samford as he carded a three-round score of 228 (77-75-76).

Rounding out the starting five for the Bulldogs were sophomores Drew Aimone (79-74-77 = 230), Bill Nabors (76-77-78 = 231) and Gabe Hyde (79-77-76 = 232).

Purdue's William Sjaichudin won the championship title of the individual competition as he turned in a 10-under-par 206. He barely topped East Carolina's Harold Varner who finished a stroke behind at 207 (67-70-70).

The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action March 28-29 as the Bulldogs head to Glencoe, Ala., for the 2011 Jacksonville State University Intercollegiate to be held at the Silver Lakes Golf Club.
