Men's Tennis Defeats Chattanooga, 6-1; Wins Third Straight SoCon Match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University men's tennis team extended its winning streak to three-consecutive matches Wednesday as the Bulldogs earned a 6-1 triumph against the Chattanooga Mocs in a Southern Conference contest held at the Samford Tennis Center.

With the win, Samford (14-4, 4-2 SoCon) remained dominant at home this season and improved its 2011 record in Birmingham to 10-3. The Bulldogs also picked up their third straight SoCon victory which also featured wins against conference foes Davidson and Georgia Southern. Samford has been triumphant in seven of its last eight matches.

Chattanooga (7-11, 2-4 SoCon) fell short in its fourth straight contest Wednesday. Since sweeping SoCon-foe The Citadel on March 18, the Mocs have dropped consecutive matches against Elon, Stetson, Appalachian State and Samford.

In Wednesday's 6-1 victory, the Bulldogs swept the doubles competition and then received singles victories from Zac Dunkle, Carl Abalos, Oliver Reynolds, Fernando Costa and Alexander Sajonz. With his straight-set triumph on court No. 4, Samford's Reynolds extended his winning streak in singles play to eight-consecutive matches. The Bulldogs' native of McDonough, Ga., improved his record to 14-3.

Samford's Dunkle, Abalos and Costa also registered straight-set victories Wednesday, while Sajonz came from behind to upend Chattanooga's Stephen Crofford on court No. 6, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

With his three-set win, Sajonz improved his record on the season to 13-3. Abalos moved to 13-4 in singles play this season, while both Dunkle and Costa improved to 12-5.

In the doubles play, Samford's duo comprised of Dunkle and Sajonz defeated the Mocs' pairing of Crofford and Jackson Tresnan 8-5 on court No. 2 to win their third straight match. The Bulldogs' duo owns a team-best record of 15-2 this season.

The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at 11 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs play host to the College of Charleston Cougars in another key SoCon matchup to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
